What is Literacy?
In the 21st century, adolescent literacy is understood as the ability to read, write, understand and interpret, and discuss multiple texts across multiple contexts. What Does our Literacy Program Look Like? Our literacy program is a 90 minutes block in the morning that consists of: Mini-lessons: We will often begin each Reader's Workshop with a reading mini-lesson. These focus on a variety of skills to help your child grow as a reader. Reader's Workshop: Students choose from four literacy centers daily to engage in independent literacy working on various reading skills . During this time, the teacher will work will small reading groups and/or individual students. Skills covered during this literacy block include: reading for accuracy, vocabulary, phonics, reading fluently with attention to rate, phrasing and flow, comprehension (literal, inferential and evaluative), understanding genres and literary analysis. Students will learn that reading is a process and we will practice reading strategically. We want students to grow as readers while continuing to enjoy and develop a love of reading! Reading Journals: Each third grade classroom does this a differently, but these will be a place for students to think critically about their reading and/or jot down helpful tips to grow as a reader. Curriculum used: Lucy Caulkins Reading Units of Study and the IRLA assessment tool. |
