Science!
Oregon, like most states, is currently transitioning over to the Next Generation Science Standards. Think of these as the Common Core for science (as there are no science content or process standards with Common Core, just science literacy). Want to know more? Check out the NGSS Website.
In essence, the NGSS aim to provide more rigor and critical thinking around science in comparison to the previous science standards.
In 3rd grade the essential questions we will look at will be:
- What is typical weather in different parts of the world during different times of the year?
- How can the impact of weather-related hazards be reduced?
- How do organisms vary in their traits?
- How are plants, animals, and environments of the past similar or different from current plants, animals, and environments?
- What happens to organisms when their environment changes?
- How do equal and unequal forces on an object affect the object?
- How can magnets be used?
- What is engineering and the engineering design process? How can I solve problems by building things?
- What is the science inquiry process? How can I conduct a fair test to find out new information?
